Grocery Shopping with My Mom by Elaine Sorrentino

At 84, she delights at shopping
the candy aisle,
her eyes aglow at the very glimpse
of colorful cellophane packages
with inviting peek-a-boo windows
revealing their sweet confections.

Thoughtful in the choosing,
she carefully plucks one
package of hard candy
and one package of soft candy
depending upon who
might visit that week,
and drops them into her cart,
filled with items to donate
to St. Vincent de Paul,
explaining this is the candy
her cleaning lady likes best.
