Ballad of the Homecoming Soldier by Christine Bassett

She waits with others in the crowd

Her heart is beating fast

Hurrah, Hurrah, she shouts aloud

He’s coming home at last.

She hears the sound of marching men

Along the cobbled stone

Louder as they round the bend

Yes, he is coming home.

And standing there she laughs and cries

And waves the Union Jack

Once more to gaze into his eyes

And never give him back.

Then suddenly her arms are wide

Her cheeks are rosy red

The man she loves is by her side

And soon they will be wed.

But war and death have changed this man

No more is he the same.….

But he’ll try to do the best he can

To live and love again.
