The Last Kiss by Dave Dutton Fraser

I was near asleep

My mind still a slumber.

My heart had no knowledge

Of future events.

I hardly noticed or

Even responded

To the taste

Of your sweet lips

I had not the opportunity

To savour, enjoy or behold

That which would be

Soon gone forever.

If only I had known,

I could have sensed

The meaning and urgency.

Your last act of kindness.

If only I had known

That my old fears were rising,

Growing from the earth you salted

And  taking me from you.

I would have awakened strong

And held you tight

If only I had known

You were kissing me,
