What it is why you do it and how people can get involved.
My journey began with my debut novel, ‘Claudia Quash : The Spell of Pencliff’ a magical adventure inspired by my daughter, also called Claudia and Tenby (Pencliff), a historic town steeped in ancient history in West Wales. The story features the Tudor Merchant’s House, St Catherine’s Island and the famous Ghost Walk. My aim was to create a unique and inspiring character that not only captivated the reader’s imagination, but encouraged children never to give up on their dreams. The story focuses on Claudia Quash, who receives a letter on her thirteenth birthday from beyond the grave from Jasper Ratchet, her great-grandfather, pleading for help. Claudia travels back in time, makes new friends, chases criminals and faces a dark terror that hovers over the land. If she doesn’t solve the crime she might never return home.
The Spell of Pencliff, is suitable for children aged 8 upwards and adults who enjoy an original fantasy story. Following the publication of the book, I was at a charity event where I donated books to help raise funds. I met Mr Tony Curtis MBE, founder of Dreams and Wishes, who invited me to write a book for the charity, a 100% volunteer, non-profit organisation, dedicated to fulfilling the dreams and wishes of seriously ill children and their families.
I wrote, ‘Claudia’s Special Wish’ and I donated all of the profits to the charity in order to help grant more special memories for very sick children and their families. The book is a beautifully illustrated magical Christmas story that closely related to the charity and gives the children and their families hope. In the story, Claudia Quash, makes a wish on a star and during the night she is whisked away and has an unforgettable adventure.
‘Claudia’s Special Wish’ was launched by the Secretary of State of Wales with the Welsh Guards on the 26th November 2016. On the 14th December 2016, I had the honour of reading the book on behalf of the charity in the House of Commons in the presence of the Speaker of the House of Commons, and I visited 10 Downing Street, London. I have been invited back again this year.
‘Claudia’s Special Wish’ has been a great success, and I have been thrilled that it has raised thousands of pounds for the charity and it has helped to grant more special memories to the children and their families of Dreams and Wishes. Also, the book has enabled me to connect with many kinds of businesses, financial institutions, building societies, banks, accountants and law firms who have purchased copies of the book, and at my suggestion donated them to local schools in order to help the community. I enjoy delivering the books to the schools, reading to the children, helping them to write original stories and encouraging them to fulfill their dreams. In addition, I have received some wonderful support for my book-signing events from departmental stores and the Tenby book shop. ‘Claudia’s Special Wish’ really is a magical book because it helps to grant wishes to children who often endure many painful treatments and can spend long periods of time in hospital. I love visiting Rainbow Ward at the University Hospital of Wales, donating books and reading to the children in order to pass the time. Also, I have successfully encouraged many children’s authors from around the world to donate books which I read to the children.
My ambition is to use my writing and the character Claudia Quash to inspire children and to help to raise funds for very sick children. I now donate all of the profits from the ‘Claudia Quash Series’ to Dreams and Wishes in order to help children and their families who may be going through a very difficult time.
It is an honour to work with Dreams and Wishes, a charity dedicated to making children’s dreams and wishes come true. Since it began in 2011, they have been working with families across the UK, providing vital support throughout the child’s illness as well as helping to build happy memories by granting lifelong wishes. Experiencing serious illness at any age is devastating for both the person and the family, but for a child it is unimaginable. The charity wants to be able to help as many children as possible, and Dreams and Wishes relies on the support and generosity of the general public and businesses around the UK.
If you would like to help me to promote the ‘Claudia Quash Series’ or place an order, please get in touch. The book links could be shared on social media, a website, or I can provide a poster for your place of business, and I will share the information and post a big thank you on Facebook for your kind support. The books can be given as gifts for friends, family, clients, customers or businesses could order them and donate them to local schools or hospitals to help the community, and they could be used as raffle prizes.
